We did it! Gus and I traveled the Northwoods - Cass Lake, Bemidji, Itasca State Park, Kabekona, Lake George, Emmaville (pop. 4), Dorset area lake roads, Nevis, and Akeley, with our home base at the cabin.
With a few exceptions, this was mostly uncharted territory for me and I was dying to check it out after outlining a basic route with my new Minnesota topographical atlas. (N-E-R-D!)
The Husband was in Madison this weekend, previewing the Ironman bike course. So while he biked 200-some miles in two days, I threw Gus in the back of the car in his pop-up travel crate and we hit the road. My main fixation was Bemidji, having never been there. I had to see what a town large enough to house a university was doing north of Leech Lake.
- Chancing upon a massive dragon boat race event in Bemidji, where Gus met approximately 400 children and greeted each one with equal enthusiasm. I also bought a $1 fab green purse at the Goodwill crazy days sale. Interesting town.
- The 1o mi. Wilderness Drive in Itasca with a stop at the park's tallest white pine (112 ft). Initially I didn't think we'd drive this extra loop, but then reminded myself that the whole theme of the trip was "YES."
- Treasure City in Royalton on the initial drive up. Dogs can go inside if held! Which sort of became like shopping with the heaviest bowling ball on record under my arm, but I wasn't about to deny Gus the experience...the experience of viewing the mind-boggling, though sadly overpriced, merchandise. But if that's what it takes to keep it in business, then c'est la vie. There's nothing like the thrill of buying completely non-functional blue sunglasses on a whim. (See picture below.)
Here are some other photos from our adventure trek. And you can bet we were pumping Madonna through the speakers!
